Drawn in MS Paint on September 19, 2008, by an 18-year-old college student in Oakland for a DeviantArt comic called Trolls. He posted it to 4chan, and within months it was the face of every troll on the internet.
Ramirez copyrighted it in 2010 and has made over $100,000 from it since. Not bad for a Paint doodle.
Pepe first appeared in Playtime, a zine Matt Furie made in MS Paint, before starring in his comic Boy's Club, posted to MySpace in 2005. In one panel Pepe explains why he pulls his pants all the way down to pee: "feels good man."
4chan found that panel in 2008 and never let go. Sad Pepe, smug Pepe, rare Pepes: all from one Paint frog.
The first rage comic: four crude panels posted to 4chan's /b/ in 2008 by someone who never took credit. Toilet water splashes up, and the last panel is a zoomed-in face screaming "FFFFFFUUUUUU-".
It kicked off rage comics, the MS Paint genre that gave us Trollface, Me Gusta, Forever Alone and Y U NO.
A bald guy with a wistful face, drawn in wobbly black outlines. He first turned up on a Polish imageboard as ciepłatwarz.jpg ("warmface.jpg"). Then in 2010 a Krautchan user named "Wojak" started posting him, and the name stuck.
By 2011, "I know that feel bro" was everywhere. Nobody knows who drew him, but he has since spawned thousands of variants: Doomer, NPC, Soyjak and more.
